Tornado Cash's freshly sanctioned Discord server and Tornado DAO governance forum appear to have been deactivated.

Tornado Cash is an Ethereum-centric mixing tool sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the United States Treasury on Monday. Following the crackdown, crypto initiatives throughout the ecosystem have tried to come to terms with the reality that for the first time, the U.S. government has sanctioned an intelligent contract — essentially software or computer code — and not a people or a group.

This morning, Dutch authorities revealed that they had detained a 29-year-old "suspected developer" in Amsterdam in connection with Tornado Cash, heightening tensions within the sector.

The Netherlands Crime Agency (FIOD) said, “He is accused of hiding unlawful financial flows and enabling money laundering through the mixing of cryptocurrencies using the decentralized Ethereum mixing service Tornado Cash.”

Members of the Tornado Cash DAO, who coordinate via Discord, debate how to preserve the project. However, a connection to the Discord server viewed using Google Chrome on desktop now returns an error message stating that the invite is incorrect. If it was erased, it is the most recent step in an intensifying crackdown on the initiative.

The forum where Tornado DAO members discussed and governed the project appears to have also been removed. This week, a link that formerly led to a proposal where DAO members were discussing alternative strategies to save the project suddenly produced an error message.

Despite removing the DAO’s forum, the project’s governing community overwhelmingly approved a request to add themselves as signatories to Tornado’s $22 million treasury.

The modification would make it easier to authorize transactions, says the proposal’s author. “If something were to happen to two signers, the community fund could still be managed.”
