The Solana network is receiving its mobile phone: "Saga," an Android cellphone developed by Solana Labs, the network's primary shareholder.
The next gadget, a modified OSOM phone with specialized crypto wallet features and the "Solana Mobile Stack (SMS)" software development kit for Web3 applications, was revealed at an event in New York City on Thursday. According to Solana Labs CEO Anatoly Yakovenko, it will cost around $1,000 and begin shipping in early 2023.
The phone represents Solana's largest wager so far on mobile-focused expansion. It will include a Web3 app store, integrated "Solana Pay" for QR code-based on-chain payments, a mobile wallet adaptor, and a "seed vault" that stores private keys deep within the phone.
“Everything is going mobile. In most countries most of ht eaccess happens through mobile phones,” Sam Bankman-Fried, the chief executive officer of FTX and a prominent Solana supporter, stated at the event that the majority of mobile phone access occurs in the majority of countries. “But crypto mobile is behind the times,” he remarked, adding how cumbersome it is to access dapps on mobile devices now.
“The best solution for this is having the actual wallet built into your phone,” he stated.
To construct the phone, Solana Labs stated it would collaborate with other ecosystem-critical firms, including Magic Eden, the leading NFT marketplace, Phantom, the most significant wallet provider, and Orca, a decentralized financial platform. All three executives were present to discuss the next mobile experience.
The Solana Foundation has donated $10 million to encourage the creation of mobile applications for its SMS. Yakovenko, a co-founder of Solana, stated in a news release, “We live our lives on our mobile devices – except for Web3 because there hasn’t been a mobile-centric approach to private key management,” The Solana Mobile Stack demonstrates a new open-source, secure, web3-optimized, and user-friendly direction for Solana.
It’s not the first smartphone Web3 strategy. Sirin Labs attempted to release a blockchain-native phone in 2018, but layoffs and lawsuits ensued as the device failed to garner popularity.
