If an Apple user has enabled automatic iCloud backups of their MetaMask wallet data, their seed phrase is kept online, the company cautioned.

MetaMask, a crypto wallet service owned by ConsenSys, has issued a community alert regarding Apple iCloud phishing attempts.

The security vulnerability affecting iPhone, Mac, and iPad users results from default device settings that save a user's seed phrase or "password-encrypted MetaMask vault" on iCloud if the user has allowed automatic backups of their application data.

MetaMask stated in a Twitter thread published on Monday that customers risk losing their assets if their Apple password "isn't strong enough" and attackers can phish their account information.

As shown below, users can stop automatic iCloud backups for MetaMask to resolve the issue.

MetaMask issued the warning in response to allegations from an NFT collector using the Twitter handle “revive dom” who reported on Friday that their whole wallet containing $650,000 worth of digital assets and nonfungible tokens (NFTs) was deleted due to this particular security flaw.

In a different thread earlier today, “Serpent,” the originator of the DAPE NFT project, described the victim’s plight. “Serpent” also helped draw the attention of MetaMask by sharing the tale with their 277,000 followers.

They saw that the victim got repeated text messages requesting that he reset his Apple ID password and a call from Apple whose caller ID was eventually falsified.

As they were unaware of the caller, “revive dom” provided a six-digit verification number to establish ownership of the Apple account. The con artists then hung up and accessed his MetaMask account using iCloud data.

Today, after MetaMask issued the warning, “revive dom” expressed his displeasure with the firm by noting:

“I am not suggesting that they shouldn’t do it, but they should inform us. Do not advise us not to digitally save our seed phrase and then do so behind our backs. If 90% of people understood this, I’d wager none of them would have the app or iCloud turned on.”
While most community responses were positive, some were quick to underline the need for cold storage and extensive due diligence while holding assets in a hot wallet.
