Cristiano Ronaldo and Binance have signed into a multi-year marketing partnership. Multiple Ronaldo NFT collections will be made and launched exclusively on the Binance NFT marketplace as part of the agreement announced today. "Together we'll give you the opportunity to own an iconic piece of sports history," Ronaldo said in a Thursday announcement post.
Later this year, Ronaldo's first NFTs on Binance are anticipated to go on sale. NFTs are tokens based on the blockchain representing digital or physical assets ownership.
"My relationship with the fans is significant to me. Therefore I wanted to be a part of the notion of giving unique experiences and access through this NFT platform," Ronaldo said in a statement.
Ronaldo has 459 million followers on Instagram, making him the most followed individual on the platform. Throughout his career, he has scored more than 770 goals and has been named FIFA’s player of the year five times. In addition to being a millionaire, he is just 37 years old.
Ronaldo’s Twitter and Instagram postings announcing the Binance news in one hour had over 48 million impressions, according to partnerships analytics firm Zoomph.
A few skeptics replied to the revelation by labeling NFTs “shady” and “worthless garbage.”
Binance denied Decrypt’s request for comment on the specifics of the transaction.
Ronaldo’s contract with Binance comes only a few weeks after Binance said it would sponsor The Weeknd’s forthcoming global tour, rebranding it as “Crypto-Powered” and donating $2 million to The Weeknd’s XO Humanitarian Fund under the UN World Food Program.
Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao tweeted a week ago that his business had passed on pricey sponsorship offers like “Super Bowl advertisements” and “stadium naming rights,” which allowed Binance to continue recruiting despite the crypto bear market and a wave of layoffs.
