A whitepaper published by a group of Cosmos contributors on Monday disclosed that the Cosmos network would provide interchain security soon. This optional feature enables certain application-specific chains on Cosmos to protect themselves using the identical security validators that power Cosmos Hub — the network's core blockchain.
According to Cosmos contributors, interchain security will go online between August and September.
Cosmos, an ecosystem of over 200 blockchains, enables developers to construct new application-specific chains if they can manage their validators. However, developing a validator set from scratch requires significant effort and money. Interchain security comes into play here.
Rather than establishing their validators, future Cosmos-enabled blockchains will be able to rely on the Cosmos Hub’s security validators. It also implies that these blockchains will transfer fees to those validators, generating further benefits for ATOM holders.
By launching interchain security, Cosmos will imitate the design of Polkadot, an alternative interoperability network. By default, on Polkadot, the validator security of all application-specific chains is shared with the central relay chain.
“Launching on the Cosmos Hub August/September 2022, Interchain Security will emerge as the premier method for projects to get the highest level of security in Cosmos by leveraging the entire 175+ Cosmos Hub validator set,” claimed Cosmos contributors. Interchain security might be crucial for onboarding projects from outside Cosmos that wish to start on Cosmos as their blockchain, they suggested.
Contributors to the Cosmos network have suggested investing 150,000 ATOM tokens ($1.1 million) from the official Cosmos Hub community pool to promote applications that utilize interchain security.
Interchain security is intended at a time when Ethereum-based initiatives, such as decentralized exchanges dYdX and Paraswap, have expressed interest in expanding to Cosmos as autonomous application-specific chains.
