For lovers of the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club nonfungible token collection, April Fools' Day arrived early. Hackers "briefly hacked" chat servers hosted by messaging platform Discord, the company behind the best-selling NFTs alerted users about 2 a.m. New York time on Friday. They warned users not to mint any Apes on the platform, which is the act of transforming a digital asset into a digital file housed on a blockchain.
Namecheap, a domain name supplier, said on Twitter that the hackers' phishing sites had been suspended after users reported them.
The Bored Apes, which have been bought by celebrities like Madonna, Paris Hilton, and Justin Bieber, have been at the vanguard of the NFT trend as digital collectibles become more widespread. Both ordinary traders and professional investors will be interested in the tokens, which mix the worlds of cryptocurrency and blockchain with the sphere of artistic activities.
The BAYC Discord channel was shut down. The Bored Ape Yacht Club allows users to create Ape-themed NFTs that are built on the Ethereum blockchain and feature cartoon ape profiles. The collection’s creator, Yuga Labs, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
