Hashgraph is an allotted ledger technology that has been defined as an opportunity for blockchains. The hashgraph technology is presently patented, and the only authorized ledger is Hedera Hashgraph. The native cryptocurrency of the Hedera Hashgraph system is HBAR.

In contrast to blockchains, hashgraphs do not package information into blocks or use miners to validate transactions. Hashgraphs use a “gossip about gossip” protocol in which the individual nodes on the network “gossip” about dealings to create directed acyclic graphs that time-collected transactions. Each “gossip” message consists of one or extra transactions plus a timestamp, a digital signature, and cryptographic hashes of two earlier activities. It makes Hashgraph form an asynchronous Byzantine Fault-Tolerant (aBFT) consensus algorithm. Hashgraph was invented in the mid – 2010s by the American computer scientist Leemon Baird. Baird is the co-founder and leader technical officer of Swirlds, an enterprise that holds patents protecting the hashgraph algorithm.

Hashgraph has been defined as a continuation or successor to the blockchain idea, which offers improved speed, fairness, low fee, and protection constraints. The Hedera co-authored, Bairdy explained that at the end of every round, each node calculates the shared state after processing all transactions that had obtained in that round, and it “digitally signs a hash of that shared state, put it in a transaction, and gossips it out to the network.


It was claimed that hashgraphs are much less technically restricted than blockchains proper. Cornell Professor Emin Gün Sirer notes that “The correctness of the complete Hashgraph protocol appears to hinge on every user knowing and agreeing upon N, the entire number of contributors in the system,” that’s “a difficult number to decide in an open allotted system.” Baird replied that “all of the nodes at a given time recognize what number of nodes there are.” A hashgraph developer stated that “…a node joining the community is a transaction like every other – it receives assigned a consensus timestamp, after which point all nodes now include it in consensus.”
